Coding critical care services 2022

March 24, 2022 @ 12:00 pm (EST)

Register here

CMS made significant changes to critical care coding effective in 2022. Not only did CMS adopt CPT prefatory language and rules, they did a 180 degree turn on allowing non-physician practitioners (NPPs) and physicians of the same specialty, in the same group to perform critical care as a split/shared visit. CMS developed a HCPCS modifier for shared services, that must be applied to the claim, and the claim must be submitted under the provider number of the practitioner who performed the substantive portion of the service. CMS developed a HCPCS modifier for unrelated critical care in the post op period. This webinar will describe when that modifier should be used.

After the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what modifier to use for shared services
  • Know how CMS determines the substantive portion of the service for critical care
  • Assess when a separate E/M service may be reported on the same day with critical care

Modifier update 2022

February 17, 2022 @ 12:00 pm (EST)

CMS released four new modifiers at the end of 2022, and CPT released one. These include modifiers for split/shared services, critical care in the post op period, audio-only telehealth services and physician supervision via audio/visual communication. It’s a lot of change for medical practices and coders. This webinar will describe the rules for using these services, based on CMS transmittals released mid-January. There will be a brief discussion of the new place of service code 10 and CMS’s policy about it.

After the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the rules for split/shared services and the modifier to use for Medicare patients
  • Know when to append modifier FT for critical care in the global period
  • Identify services that may be reported as telehealth services

“My organization approached Betsy Nicoletti because we had providers failing coding audits.

Betsy’s name is out there in the coding world as a leader in the field and wanted the best for our providers.

Betsy works with the organization to set up webinars for our new provider on boarding training process (which according to them has been most beneficial), as well as subsequent auditing to ensure provider engagement and understanding.

Betsy’s one on one approach has helped the organization overall by the specialized attention to our specific needs.

I appreciate Betsy’s tactful approach with the providers to lessen their concerns as it relates to proper coding. She is up to date on all of the current changes in coding and maintains the communication whenever warranted.

Overall I have found the experience of working with Betsy as positive and educational. I would not hesitate to recommend Betsy to any organization that needs to improve their coding practices and improve success rates from outside auditing.”
